Le trésor de Vix- Retour des fouilles 2019
On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, let yourself be captivated by archaeology at the Musée du Pays Châtillonnais - Trésor de Vix!
Discover exclusively the fascinating objects uncovered during the 2019 excavations of the famous Vix tomb.
On Friday, September 19, 2025, Bruno Chaume, research fellow at CNRS ArTeHIS and director of the PCR "Vix and its Environment," will be signing his new book La principauté celtique du Mont Lassois à Vix at 5:00 PM in the museum shop. This meeting will be followed at 6:00 PM by a lecture on this new scientific work and the excavations at the Vix site. The lecture is free, providing a unique opportunity to deepen your knowledge of the history and archaeology of this prestigious site. This lecture will be given in French only.
On Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21, accompanied by our passionate mediators, explore the Vix room and be amazed by the latest archaeological discoveries that shed new light on this emblematic site. Documentaries and films will immerse you in the work of archaeologists, revealing the behind-the-scenes of the excavations. The Vix site, located in Côte-d'Or, is world-renowned for the tomb of the "Lady of Vix," whose discovery in 1953 revealed an exceptional collection of artifacts. While the burial itself has been studied, the vast funerary monument surrounding it had never been thoroughly excavated. From August to November 2019, an important excavation was conducted by Inrap, in collaboration with the ARTEHIS laboratory and with the support of the DRAC Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and the Communauté de Communes du Pays Châtillonnais. Thanks to techniques such as sieving, numerous new objects, some as small as 3 mm, were discovered, enriching the museum's collections and offering a fresh perspective on this Celtic site.
But that’s not all! On Saturday, September 20, and Sunday, September 21, at 3:00 PM, the museum invites you to a behind-the-scenes look at preventive conservation with demonstrations of static anoxia. This innovative technique eliminates harmful insects by depriving works of oxygen, ensuring their optimal preservation. Thanks to the acquisition of new equipment in 2024 and the training of our team, we now carry out these treatments directly at the museum, thus reducing conservation costs.
On Saturday, September 20, in celebration of the return of the painting by Andrea Appiani depicting General Marmont, newly restored, one of our mediators will give a presentation on the imperial period, focusing on Napoleonic Italy and Neoclassicism. At the end of the 18th century, painter Andrea Appiani, a key figure in neoclassical art, became one of the main official artists under Napoleon, creating portraits and decorative scenes that celebrated the values of the new regime. Come discover his work at the Museum and the influence of his style on his time.
Admission to the museum is free on Saturday and Sunday, providing the perfect opportunity to explore our collections and discover the hidden treasures of Vix! These days will also be an ideal time to (re)discover the temporary exhibition Marc Bohan: Les Années Dior, a deep dive into the world of the designer and his legacy at the house of Dior.
A unique experience to learn more about archaeology, heritage preservation, and the fascinating history of the Vix tomb! Don’t miss this exceptional event!
